Each posting includes a description of the position and the minimum required qualifications.  All CAND Clerk’s Office positions listed below will be open until filled (priority consideration given to applications received before the date listed).

  • The Court is not authorized to reimburse travel expenses for interviews or relocation.
  • Applicants called in for an interview for the Clerk’s Office may be given tests to determine their level of skill.
  • Final successful candidates are subject to a FBI fingerprint check and background investigation.

Judicial Law Clerk for Magistrate Judge Virginia DeMarchi (.pdf, 211 KB)

Magistrate Judge Virginia K. DeMarchi with the Northern District of California is accepting applications for a judicial law clerk position in San Jose, California. Principal duties include extensive legal research and writing on a full range of civil issues arising in federal court . The position begins September 2, 2025, and continues until September 2, 2026, unless extended.
Applicants must have exceptional research, writing, organizational, and communication skills, and demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Applicants with prior litigation work experience are encouraged to apply.

Temporary Pro Se Law Clerk (.pdf, 131 KB)

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California is seeking a Temporary Pro Se Law Clerk to assist the court with civil rights complaints and habeas corpus petitions filed by prisoners not represented by counsel. The position is temporary (October 7 thru November 6, 2024 with possible extension), full-time and based in San Jose, CA but telework arrangements may be considered.
